1. Visions, Voices, Mystics and Muses
come and spend an hour or so in the finest company of Socrates, Joan of Arc, William Blake, Robert Schumann, Alexander the Great, Philip K.Dick and Beach Boy head musical genius Brian Wilson, among others!
We will explore the commonality of the voice hearing experience through the lens of human history.
Not all voice hearers go on to make huge cultural impacts on the human story...but somw have and still do!
This is a fun, engaging talk and we get a chance to explore some surprising aspects of Art, Music, Spirituality, Science and Philosophy along the way.
I speak of my early experiences running support groups for folk hearing critical voices, often in hospital settings.
and how learning of the diversity of lived human experience is enlightening and allows us to speak more easily when it comes to describing and understanding our own unusual experiences.
How introducing famous historical figures who had visions and voices increased group members self esteem and normalised discussion of a generally taboo subject : HEARING VOICES.
2. Making Sense of Hearing Voices
A 90 minute talk and practical workshop which looks at some revealing research that shows how we can make more sense of seemingly confusing experiences.
Participants will learn how to help individuals PROFILE voice experiences so they can be externalised and then looked at as a useful map of interior experiences. What might we learn? How might this prove useful?
We examine the benefits of Voices JOURNALS and what purpose they can serve.
We look at spotting TRIGGERS and how to avoid them, as well as various helpful techniques for distracting noisy minds.
FOCUSING on voices can be helpful at times as well as ignoring them.
We learn some strategies for applying this skill.
We can look at ways of SELECTIVE LISTENING.
Learn TIMESHARING with voices. How to negotiate voice free time outs and making agreements with voices , putting the voice hearer more in charge.
As a group we then work through a real case study from my own 17 year history of working with individuals who are troubled by critical voices.
We will see that it is entirely possible to disentangle complicated and confusing experiences and give tips and hints to people on better and more empowering ways to cope.
Ideal for Health Professionals, educators, emergency services staff, family members and voice hearers themselves.
3. Spinning on the Wheel of Spirit 90 minutes
How do we define spiritual experiences and why might health professionals confuse them for signs of mental illness?
This is a light hearted and informative look at the way that transformative opportunities for growth and personal development may be missed unless we have our ears and eyes open to the possibilities.
The workshop includes sharing from my own 20 years of mental health recovery work in hospitals and community settings, personal stories and humour as well as voluntary group exercises to make us laugh and to connect us with our own sense of spiritual identity.
What can we do to be helpful to individuals who may be going through intense experiences?
What are the signs and symptoms of a spiritual crisis?
What are the risks of misdiagnosis?
Ideal for : Health workers, recovery workers, medical professionals, Mind, Body, Soul therapists, general public.
A workshop and talk recently given at the International Congress on Hearing Voices, Paris, France, October 2016.
