Martin was a warehouse manager. A big warehouse with 300 workers. He noticed that one of his newer workers was picking the wrong items each time he worked out on the floor.
Calling him in for a chat, he noticed that 'Dave" seemed distracted. He wouldn't really look at Martin as they talked. Martin showed him the list of items and then compared it to the goods actually in the basket Dave was carrying..it bore zero similarity to the actual "picking list". " What's going on Dave?" he asked.."Can you see the difference between the list and the items you've selected?" Dave affirmed that on examining the list that he could..But he said : "They're what "they" told me to pick." 'And who are "they"? Martin asked.. .Dave looked uncomfortable..."My voices." 'Martin thought a few moments..He told me he had never come across this situation before but, luckily, he was a man with some life experiences behind him and somehow knew not to panic or over react. "Ignore the voices Dave..Focus on the list. The voices are misadvising you. For whatever reason. The list is important because it's your job and you'll get paid for picking items accurately. But..if you keep picking what your voices tell to to choose, well, we will have to let you go. Ignore the voices and follow the instructions on those sheets and you'll be fine. Do you want to keep this job?" Dave said yes. Since then? Accurate picking, no worries and it seems to have helped Dave steady himself and hold down a job. Martin keeps a gentle eye on him and advises on little deviations here and there. Dave goes back and re-picks incorrect orders... ...refocuses... Keeps his job and has some money in his pocket every week.
